Check Out This Incredible Animated Trailer for a Tears of the Kingdom Game Boy Demake

YouTubers Channy and Kimberly posted a Tears of the Kingdom Game Boy demake trailer that’s guaranteed to have ’90s gamers waxing nostalgic. One part beautiful cel animation, the other part exciting mock gameplay, sadly, the product teased in the video is all parts conceptual.

The trailer opens with a shot of Princess Zelda smiling wistfully at something off camera, then the music picks up as the game’s logo is revealed. What follows is a quick showcase of the characters, enemies, and skills you’ll find in the new Zelda title. Then we get a glimpse of gameplay. One shot shows Link riding a makeshift car and another sees him flip off a floating island to land atop a flying machine.

Having lived through the early ’90s, it’s hard to watch this trailer and not be awash with nostalgia. From the soft color bleed to that gentle touch of blur, the whole trailer harkens back to that era of VHS tapes and Saturday mornings sat watching Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics.

And let’s not ignore the clips of “gameplay”. I’m surprised to see how well Tears of the Kingdom translates to the Game Boy’s screen, though I’m not sure if I’m ready to go back to bottom bar skill swapping à la Oracle of Seasons.

The box art is incredible, too. Stylistically, it’s a far cry from the actual game’s look, but for a product that’s meant to have been released during the Game Boy’s heyday, it’s spot on.

As the cherry on top (or salt in the wound, depending on how you look at it), the trailer closes with a gorgeous render of a special edition Tears of the Kingdom Game Boy Color. Seriously, feast your eyes on this:

Sadly, this will never become reality. At least we have the Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to look forward to.
