The default Proton version causes microstutters and frame drops. They can be reduced by switching to Proton Experimental. Those familiar with the 3D Fallout games already know that they take some tweaking to get feeling right, and crashes are typical, so don’t expect much different on the Steam Deck.
The bigger issue is the lack of support for simultaneous mouse/keyboard and controller input. This means you can’t use mouse look with your trackpad, which we’ve found to be the ideal setup for first-person shooters on the Steam Deck. Luckily, the amazing Fallout modder StewieAI has a fix that makes it possible, though you’ll have to do a bit of research on how to install mods on Linux.

New Vegas has optimization problems leading to inconsistent performance and crashing. So, despite being an older game, the Steam Deck still has problems managing a consistent 60 frames per second on anything higher than the Low quality preset. Luckily, the Low preset doesn’t look much worse than the game at max settings, so we aren’t losing out on much visually.
